Coneat

Uruguay’s productivity and soil fertility classification system

The groups defined as CONEAT classes are not strictly basic cartographic units of land but homogeneous areas, at a defined working scale, defined –for tax purposes- by their production capacity in terms of wool and meat from cattle and sheep on the hoof. (Article 65 of Law Nr. 13,695, dated 24 October 1968).

Such capacity is expressed by means of an index relative to the country’s mean production capacity, in natural conditions, identified with an index value of 100.

From an edaphic perspective, productivity is seen as the initial capacity of the soil to produce a certain yield by hectare per year, which can be theoretically expressed as a percentage of the optimum yield obtained from the soil with the most favorable conditions, upon the application of a defined technology. In practice, a number of different production enterprises have successfully adapted the soil for specific purposes. These not always correspond to the best Coneat indexes, as it happens with cases of forestry, rice and wine exploitation, among others, where soils with a low Coneat index have been resorted to.
